OCTOBER 2011

Humberside Airport is situated at Kirmington, North Lincolnshire on the A18. It is a small international airport, owned by the Manchester Airports Group and handles around 320,000 passengers to over 20 destinations each year making it the 28th busiest airport in the UK.

The airport has 5 resident flying clubs and organisations and is a major operating base for helicopters flying to North Sea gas platforms; it is in fact the second busiest heliport in the UK behind Aberdeen Airport in Scotland.

The airport was previously a Royal Air Force base, RAF Kirmington, opened in 1941 during World War II, from which No. 166 Squadron RAF operated the Avro Lancaster. The site was abandoned after the war in 1945, and lay unused until 1974 when the local council re-opened the site as Kirmington Airport.

By the mid-1980s, 100,000 passengers were using the airport every year and in August 2001 direct flights to Corfu, the Algarve and the Costa Del Sol were introduced. A major expansion of airport leisure facilities was unveiled in January 2003, including a larger restaurant, a new pub and viewing conservatory. Iceland air introduced regular twice-weekly fish flights into the airport the following month.

Following an extensive public consultation exercise, the final version of the Master Plan was published in 2007 which outlines the airport's future development up to 2030 where passenger and job numbers are hoped to grow considerably.

So if you are looking for a small, local airport to fly to your next destination, why not call Aura Journeys of Newark to take you there in comfort and style.
